Dawn Baker Ms. NH Senior America 2010
Was born in Concord NH in 1944. Although she was raised in the city of Manchester NH, she is a country girl at heart. Growing up, she was fortunate to spend a lot of time on the farms of her grandparents and aunt and uncle. She has fond memories of her grandmother teaching her how to fish, finding new born kittens in the hayloft, feeling the velvet flutter of the workhorses" muzzles as they searched for a teat in her hand, and collecting still warm eggs from the chicken coop. To this day she loves the smell of freshly-mowed hay. Dawn and her husband, Pooch, have lived on a small farm in Warner NH since 1976 where they raise Christmas Trees and make Maple Syrup.

Dawn married young and went to college when her two children entered school.. Her husband worked 2 jobs to help pay tuition so Dawn's studies often started after helping the kids with their homework, cooking dinner, giving baths and reading bed-time stories Still, she earned her Bachelor's Degree at Notre Dame College and graduated with honors at the age of 30. She later went on to get her Masters in Education at Antioch NE University in 1989. In 1973-1974 she was elected to Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. She taught grades 4, 5, and 6 in Pembroke and New London for 28 years before retiring and was elected to the Who's Who Among America's Teachers in 2002.

Dawn enjoys any type of dance and is a choreographed ballroom dancer who continues to take dance classes. She is the co-president of Bradford Country Squares, a dance group that travels to festivals and show, Her husband is deaf, so she and her dance partner, Warren Sherburne, have traveled with the NH Senior America Cameo Club and will continue to do so after her reign as Ms. NH Senior America is over. She has also performed with the Silver Stars at the Palace Theater in Manchester and has performed a comedy routine called "Roxanne" at local functions. Dawn loves all types of music and is an Djembe drum player, learning from Master Drummer Avdoulaye Sylla of Guinea, Africa and other. In addition, she enjoys floral arranging, sewing, fashion coordination, knitting, canoeing, fishing and writing poetry. She is also a member of NEA-NH, the Retired Teachers' Association and the Mill-Around Dance Center.

As a 21-year cancer survivor, Dawn is grateful for th care she was given while at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in lebanon NH, she she has been volunteering as a Cancer Resource Volunteer at the Norris Cotton Cancer Center offering support to patients and families as well as educating them on the various services that are available to them. She volunteers in the same capacity at NH Oncology/Hematology in Hooksett NH. As Ms. NH Senior America she was the motivational speaker at the Norris Cotton Cancer Center Survivors' Day.

Dawn believes that her positive attitude has helped her through some hard times and has consciously chosen to "dance in the rain"
